Use metro/parking outside Area C
Understanding Milan's zones:
  • Area C: Central zone requiring a €5 daily pass to enter (Mon-Fri 7:30-19:30). Cameras at entry points record all vehicles.
  • Area B: Wider zone restricting older, polluting vehicles. Most modern rental cars are allowed.

Many tourists find it easier to park outside Area C and use Milan's excellent metro system.

How It Works in Short

What is Area C?

Area C is Milan's congestion charge zone covering the historic city center. To drive in:

  • Pay €5 for a daily pass (valid for one calendar day)
  • Purchase online at area-c.it or via SMS before or shortly after entering
  • Active Monday-Friday 7:30-19:30 (no charge weekends, August, holidays)
  • Cameras at entry gates record license plates automatically
What is Area B?

Area B is a wider environmental zone restricting polluting vehicles:

  • Most modern cars (Euro 6 diesel, Euro 4+ petrol) can enter freely
  • Older vehicles are banned during weekdays
  • Most rental cars meet the requirements
  • Check your vehicle's emission class if driving your own car
Should I drive in Milan?

Milan has excellent public transport. Consider:

  • Metro: 4 lines covering the city (M1, M2, M3, M4)
  • Park & Ride: Leave car at metro stations outside Area C
  • Traffic: Heavy congestion especially during rush hours
  • Cost: €5/day for Area C plus parking fees adds up

Many visitors park once and use metro for sightseeing.

Where can I park?
  • Outside Area C: Parking garages just outside the zone (e.g., near Porta Garibaldi, Centrale station)
  • Park & Ride lots: At major metro stations with discounted rates
  • Inside Area C: Possible but requires €5 entry fee plus parking costs
  • Street parking: Limited and expensive in center
What if I forget to pay for Area C?

You have until midnight the day after entry to pay online at area-c.it. After that:

  • Automatic fine issued (€80+)
  • For rental cars, fine goes to rental company who adds admin fees
  • Set a reminder if you enter Area C to pay before the deadline

Short FAQs for Milan

Is Area C active on weekends?
No. Area C is not active on weekends, in August, or on public holidays. You can drive in the center freely during these times (though you still need to meet Area B requirements).
Can I pay Area C fee at a machine or booth?
No physical booths exist. Pay online at area-c.it, via the official Area C app, by SMS, or at some tobacconists (tabacchi). Do this before midnight the day after entry.
Will my rental car be allowed in Area B?
Almost certainly yes. Rental cars are typically modern vehicles meeting Area B requirements (Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4+ petrol). You can check the emission sticker in the car or ask the rental company.
